January 10, 1945 - Too Much Snow and Grapefruit Two Days in a Row
From the Operations Record Book:
The Squadron was stood down from operations. No flying training possible owing to snow and low cloud, and the day was devoted to ground training which included a lecture to all Pilots and their engineer on the Mk 8 Auto-Control by a specialist. The services of the aircrews were also called upon to assist in clearing snow from the runways.
Harris was impressed with the food at 550 Squadron, writing to his wife Margaret shortly after arriving at base that the “mess is good and the food is excellent.” In a subsequent letter, he exclaimed surprise at having been served grapefruit two days in a row, “Goodness knows where they came from.”
