January 27, 1945 - The Bombs of Bomber Command

From the Operations Record Book:

The Squadron was again stood down from operations and the boys are beginning to tire of the continual stand-downs, although very little can be done to improve the weather conditions.  The weather was generally poor with occasional snow showers and low cloud, but in spite of this, the Squadron managed to get seven aircraft with crews into the air for training purposes between the snow showers, and completed 25 hours 50 minutes flying training.  No night flying training took place, having been cancelled owing to snow storms.

The above photo demonstrates the different types of bombs used by Bomber Command: The smallest weighed 40 lbs (18 kg), the biggest, the “Grand Slam” weighed 22,000 lbs (10,000 kg).  The 4,000 lb bomb shown above is referred to as a “Cookie.”  The markings refer to medium casing (MC) or heavy casing (HC) bombs.
