Sergeant Kenneth Smith, Flight Engineer



Kenneth Smith was born in 1924 and grew up in Northampton, England, approximately 130 miles SE of North Killingholme air base.

A member of RAF's Volunteer Reserve, Smith completed his training at RAF Regents Park in London, No 7 Initial Training school at RAF Newquay, No 5 School of Technical Training at RAF Locking and No 4 School of Technical Training at RAF St. Athan before arriving at RAF Blyton in September 1944.

Smith was assigned alongside the other members of the Harris Crew to 550 Squadron on January 8, 1945 and flew all seven live operations with the Harris crew.

Kenneth's brother Keith also joined the RAF but never saw active service.  His father, Northampton's local tax inspector, also worked as an Air Raid Warden and his sister, Mary Elizabeth was a volunteer at the Army barracks set up in the Northampton racecourse.
