Canadian Red
Cross food parcels were a favourite of Allied POWs and included milk powder,
butter, cheese, corned beef, luncheon meat, salmon, sardines, dried apples,
dried prunes, sugar, jam, biscuits, chocolate, salt, pepper, tea and soap.
Nearly one
in ten Canadians contributed to the Canadian Red Cross relief effort as a
volunteer, helping to assemble and ship over 16 million food parcels to
Canadian POWs.[1]
In March
1945, Colonel Stark authorized the issue of two Red Cross parcels per prisoner
per week in anticipation of a possible evacuation of the camp. These extra parcels were intended to
strengthen the prisoners for the possible march to come and were also a prevention
against wasted food which might be abandoned in case of a sudden move.
